From the moment you contact our office for an appointment, we’re here to help you get the care and treatment you need to achieve and maintain the best vision and eye health possible. Many types of eye issues do not require surgical intervention, and can be treated by reducing exposure to certain environmental factors, combined with appropriate medications or adjustments to existing medications.
The desert is a harsh environment for eyes, and combined with other factors like computer use, aging, other medical conditions, or contact lens use, people who live in the Coachella Valley are prone to more severely dry eyes. In some cases, when medical management doesn’t solve vision issues caused by dry eyes, punctual plugs may be placed in the tear ducts to slow down the amount of tears that drain out before they can help lubricate the eye properly.
Cataracts are a common eye condition among people age 55 and older. If you’re in that category and you’ve noticed increasing difficulty with your night vision, cloudy or blurred vision, colors that seem faded or yellowed, seeing halos around lights, or double vision in one of your eyes, you should schedule an exam to find out what’s causing those issues. If cataracts are the sources of your vision issues, rest assured that they can be safely and effectively treated on an outpatient basis, and most patients will notice improved vision within 24 hours of cataract surgery. This proven procedure is painless and takes about half an hour to complete.
Glaucoma is a condition that is most often detected through routine eye exams, which measure eye pressure and images of the optic nerve. If diagnosed early, glaucoma can be treated using eye drops to lower eye pressure. In cases where the disease has progressed further than drops alone can effectively manage, laser surgery offers improved vision and slows future damage to the optic nerve.
Macular degeneration is another common eye condition among people over age 60. The macula is the part of the retina that your eye uses for central vision. With age and certain health conditions and other risk factors, the macula can form either dry calcium deposits or abnormal blood vessel growth that reduce your ability to see clearly in the center of your field of vision. Like glaucoma, macular degeneration is most effectively treated when detected early through routine exams, which gives you more options for slowing the progression of the disease before it affects your vision significantly. In some cases, medical management is effective, while in other cases, laser treatments may be needed.
